Rather, because you’ll be exploring the grounds of the former Davidson plantation, begun in 1760 by Scottish immigrants. Today, the preserve protects 487 acres on Mountain Island Lake (which only dates back to 1924). If you're searching for an easy, short, wooded hiking trail in the middle of Charlotte, then you've found it. You can almost forget that you're in a large city and just enjoy the serenity of nature. This pathway consists of several smaller trails, combined to make one larger loop. There is a nearby facility that has both public restrooms and a picnic area for hikers to enjoy a quick bite to eat.

If you do plan to stay a while, check out our list of Summer 2022 events & festivals in the mountains, here. Chimney Rock State Park is one of the most well-known and iconic state parks in the area, and it is an awesome place to go hiking near Charlotte. While there are many different trails and paths you can hike, we’d recommend Party Rock and Exclamation Point for their spectacular views (great names, right?!). Autumn is a beautiful time to visit dry falls as the trail provides stunning photo opportunities of the foliage encompassing the falls from multiple angles. You can almost touch the water if you try because the walkway lets you get so close. When the water level is high, you might even feel drifts of the wind pushing the water toward you.

The BackYard Trail (BYT) is one of Charlotte’s most popular urban trails, covering 5.09 miles. It is considered a generally challenging route and is more frequented by mountain bikers, but it is also used for hiking and general exploring. The trail features sharp uphill and steeps down runs and can be pretty overgrown sometimes, especially after rainfall, so best to watch your step.

When you're planning your next adventure or business trip, the airline you choose can make all the difference. When you're planning your next trip and considering flying with Republic Airways, it's natural to wonder about their safety record. After all, ensuring you're in good hands while thousands of feet up in the air is pretty crucial. You're not alone in your concerns; it's a question on the minds of many travelers. This loop trail features a diverse variety of terrain, including gravel, dirt, and paved sections of pathway.
Located in Connelly Springs, NC, over an hour’s drive from Charlotte, the High Shoals Falls Loop can be found in South Martins State Park. Named after the 80-ft tall High Shoals waterfall the trail crosses the Jacob Fork River to reach the waterfall and can be easily accessed from the park’s parking lot. In the nearby town of Huntersville, just a 20-min drive from Charlotte lies the waterfront trails of the Latta Nature Preserve. The 16 miles of trail begins at the Quest Nature Centre where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna present in the preserve. One of the most popular and highly trafficked trails in Charlotte, Mallard Creek Greenway is a 9.2-mile-long out-and-back trail that is best enjoyed in late summer or early fall. This is because during this season numerous butterflies can be found walking along the trail along with other wildlife such as gray foxes, white-tailed deer, and great blue herons.
Pockets of natural spaces abound inside the city limits, providing an opportunity for outdoor adventures. And, with its location in the state's central Piedmont region, Charlotte offers easy access to some of the state's most beautiful hiking locations. The Raptor Trail is a 0.75-mile walking trail within the Carolina Raptor Center – a zoological facility that houses and displays over 30 birds of prey. The trail is open every day from 10 am to 4 pm but will require an admission fee for entry.
Locals note that this is a really interesting trail, especially because of the rock house ruins you can explore, but that it can sometimes be hard to follow. Charlotte has many nearby state and county parks that offer endless miles of hiking opportunities for both residents and tourists. You'll discover urban city trails, as well as rustic hikes through the densely wooded forests. You'll come across waterfalls, abandoned homesteads, and many species of wildlife if you move quietly and keep your eyes peeled. Yes, “The Cold Mountain” from the book and film is also part of Shining Rock Wilderness in Pisgah National Forest and a tough 10-mile hike up 3,000 feet brings you to the summit. Part of your hike will be through the narrows and requires ridge walking (AKA clinging to the side of the mountain for dear life) for about 5 miles.
I suggest taking a different path up than you do down to take in as much of the Linville Wilderness beauty as you can. At 1.5 miles, the elevation change is the real challenge here so allow yourself plenty of time to reach the top. The views are nothing short of breathtaking and some of the furthest-stretching in the area. The unpaved service road (1264) in Pisgah National Forest is closed January through March, so plan your trip accordingly. This is about an hour from Asheville, but worth the side trip.
